It probably goes without saying that choosing a lightly pigmented wood, thinner veneer, and using an oil finish that completely penetrates the veneer and the paper backing will allow more efficient transfer of light through the shade. Ebony, e.g., would not be my first choice. You wouldn't want Jimmy Stewart (or Martha Stewart) to see your light and describe it as a "dark." :)
