The issue was whether the mesh would print the veneer. Not in my experience.

However, you raised another point....to caul or not to caul. Air pressure guarantees that there will be exactly the same pressure pressing on every bit of the veneer if a caul is not used and a permeable mesh is used. If the veneer is flexible under 15 psi pressure the veneer will conform exactly to the substrate surface and 15 psi is good enough to stick it.

If the caul and substrate surfaces don't mate perfectly high spots will see more than 15 psi and low spots less than 15 psi, or zero. This situation may or may not be better than 15 psi everywhere. For the work I have done 15 psi uniformly everywhere is best.
