When my spindles or stretchers are quite wide enough, I often use window screening material (fiberglass or whatever it is - NOT metal). I put it in the hole with yellow glue in a crisscross pattern (like a + sign). I make sure that there isn't a lot of glue too high on the piece that I'm inserting. I cut the excess screening material off after the piece is assembled.
