Subject:
Two Spray Finish Questions

Robby Wright
I am finishing a stand-up desk for my boss. It is made from cherry and cherry plywood. After sanding for hours, I applied the first coat of TransFast dye and it looks good. A bit of blotching, but I can live with it.

I am planning on using General Finishes PolyAcrylic Water Base Top Coat, using an HPLV conversion sprayer with my air compressor. So here are my questions:

1. Can I spray the top coat directly on the TransFast dye or do I need a shellac coat to prevent bleed?

2. Is there an easy way to clean the spray gun? I have avoided spraying because of cleaning the gun. Spray for 10 minutes and spend a half hour cleaning. I would rather be butchering wood! For cleaning after the dye, I removed any leftover dye, removed the cup and cleaned it, then ran water through the cup connector until it ran clean. Finally, I put water in the gun and sprayed it to make sure nothing remains.

Your help is appreciated.
