We have really hard water and no softener. The best thing we do for the dishwasher is run vinegar through it. If we don't do that often enough, the dishes don't seem to get clean. Dump in a cup or so with every wash, or run a cycle every couple of weeks with no dishes and a couple quart of vinegar. Cleans it right up, and makes all the mechanicals work better.
