I hear that, on the East Coast, cedar and cypress are used where we Westies use redwood. Some cedars are more rot-resistant than others, I understand; but don't know which.
If you can get ipe from your yards, that might be worth trying, though you'll probably swear more than with the woods above - a lot harder. Or mahogany. Either of these, oiled periodically, might be way more attractive than a softwood.
