http://www3.sears.com/ Take the model # of your lathe and input it into the site to go to the parts page for it. They may very well show the "speed reducer setup" in the replacment parts.
I know I went there to look up some information on a 60's model drill press, it showed the parts breakdown and the part numbers. Any thing that I needed for it was not available any more, but just as a refrence it was worth the look.
An as the other poster said I'm sure it was just a jack shaft afair is common.
