>I don't think that there is a firm amount that you must leave. It depends on wood type, wood dryness and amount of time in the steamer. For steaming, get a large cardboard tube, like the kind used for rolling carpets. Put a small hole in the center for a teapot spout and a loose fitting rag at each end. Nothing fancy required for a small piece like a chair leg.
