Judging by the yawning mouths (or patched mouths) of every woodie I've ever had in my hands, the 'old timers' tended to keep them flat and out of wind. I've seen pictures of ones with unpatched mouths still tight, but the rest of the plane showed they were lightly used.

This isn't meant to re-open the debate about the effect of mouth aperture on plane performance. Everybody's opinion on this has been duly noted, years ago. Let's not reopen that hoary old chestnut.
