My experience with fettling metal planes is limited to smoothing rough nicks that would gouge or disfigure wood. Other than stripping away life, I can't justify a cosmetic reason for grinding away use marks.

What I normally have found are double irons destroyed by grinders. Maybe, it's easier to slap sandpaper on a plate and 'rubba-dub-dub'. There is something to show for the effort.
