Deep pits will leak iron phosphate all over your stock practically forever unless you get it out of there.

Anything with active rust in deep pits in the sole should be a hard pass -- not worth the hassle unless you can send it out for professional grinding all the way below pit level. Well, unless your idea of fun is hand grinding/lapping 1/32"+ off the bottom of a long plane, all the while achieving or maintaining a flat/out of winding condition. I'd rather sit down on a hill of fire ants.
