thin vs thick paper

a really thin paper will give a good idea of absolute sharpness at the very tip. A thicker paper or card will give a good idea of how much of that sharpness also transmits to severing something more substantial (like pushing a chisel through wood).

They're both good tests, and in most cases, if you can pass one, you can pass the other.
