Finish is not a fad

Finish must go with the style of the piece. How about bright polished lacquer on Danish Modern? How about just oil on a Goddard reproduction desk top? I could go on. I carefully choose the finish to match the form and function of my furniture. In the case of the mahogany piece it is a formal piece and demanded a formal finish-grain filled and polished on the top, not filled on the sides. Informal pieces I never fill and they might demand a less formal finish. The bed I am making for granddaughter will have a satin finish. Not because it is fashionable at this time but because the informal style requires a satin finish.
