almost straight up and down against the wheel on a slipjoint knife and you'll have no issues. Same for drop point knives that have a really abrupt tip and catch easily, just turn them near vertical as the stroke ends and the wheel becomes kind of nutless as far as grabbing anything.

Well, I guess nothing changes with the wheel. What you're feeding it changes.
