This chipping point is much higher than 62 for 52100. But at mid straw, the 52100 chisel that I showed is probably 60/61 hardness.

At any rate, high toughness steel has been available for a long span of woodworking tool manufacture. Can you identify a commercial woodworking tool before 1980 with high toughness steel?
