I found another older picture...

..from when I was trying stains and rubbing shellac right into them when they're wet.

These are quickie almost french polish type pictures after one coat - i'm sure the gloss remained but some of the wood features would telegraph after the shellac fully cures, just as it would with lacquer.

And I'm sure that a commercial maker could skip that by sanding and skimming the wood with something like plaster of paris or spackle. the guitar market seems to like such uniformity, and the makers seem to like that they can hide multi-piece bodies and wood defects by doing that and adding a dark toner.


this process is so easy and pleasing to do that I think more people would do it instead of wiping poly if they knew how easy it was. It becomes more tedious on something like this (khaya, with big pores, even for khaya), but it's not hard, it just needs to be done over a couple of separate sections or the whole layer of shellac softens becomes uneven:


the "poor man's" part of this is using a high pound cut of shellac and more oil than alcohol and living with the results in return for the speed of laying a lot down.
