Eliot,

Peter Follansbee is a woodworker who specializes in 17th century furniture and that period's working methods. He labels himself as a joiner and works nearly exclusively using only hand tools. Peter is also an excellent teacher and can clearly explain the methodology and techniques he employs.

His choice of red and especially white oak (when he can get it) is because he works green wood and oaks are traditional to 17th century work. He starts with a log section and splits (rives) off pieces, trimming them to size with hatchet and plane. His blog is listed below. In my option, he's the real deal!
