I took a petrology class well before differential equations and the professor was appalled that it was not a prerequisite for his class (the usual professor was on sabbatical, the fill in normally taught graduate level classes). He was eminently practical however, upon understanding the problem he simply took a few lecture hours to teach the elements of diff eq that were relevant to his material, mostly thermodynamics.

So I had an early practical application of the mathematics well before taking the more abstract class from the math department. I did enjoy the class taught by the math professor too though - I finally realized how easy those high school word problems really were!

Viewed as differentials, it is simple to figure out where the bumble bee hits the freight train - as an algebra problem I recall that kind of stuff to be difficult to formulate. The math is the same, but understanding differentials provides wonderful clarity.
