Calculus was three semesters of random boredom to me, there seemed to be no point to it. I think I would try to teach the two subjects together, to bring a purpose to all that calculus.

Best is to have math taught under the influence of the engineering or physics department as it is in many engineering schools. The introductory Physics classes at Cal Tech are a example of the integration (pun alert). As the physics class progresses the incorporation calculus into solving the physics problems develops concurrent.

Elliot's notions of how calculus is taught is a far cry from what a science or engineering student will encounter at a good school. Watered down calculus? Most students will have entered these schools with the first semester calculus completed in High School AP math.
