Woodworking skills are nothing like mathematics, they are more like practicing a sport.

Cutting dovetails has little to do with analytical thinking, it has everything to do with muscle memory and refining one's judgement of where to put a saw kerf or how to chop efficiently. If you want to go for the best, tightest you can right off the bat then have at it. Some of us have found that a frustrating path and offered a more easy going one. I know I couldn't do that one a day for a month routine - it would work well, without a doubt, but I prefer to spend my time as usefully as I can. Thus I practice by making stuff I can use but don't obsess over the details.

For what it's worth, I was horrible at calculus, C's all the way through, but then got an A in differential equations. Much better teacher for DE, but also it made sense to me why you would solve DE's. Calculus was three semesters of random boredom to me, there seemed to be no point to it. I think I would try to teach the two subjects together, to bring a purpose to all that calculus.
