my experience with the schools..

..I could be convinced that I'm stupid if being forced to learn the first way (that's a method for conscientious and organized folks who can use something without needing to know why it works).

In school, I struggled until realizing that even if someone teaches you method 1, you can take it upon yourself to get the background and make it method to. That to me is very easy.

Most of the class didn't agree. I struggle doing routine things the same way over and over, and would have difficulty staying focused (which most attribute to lack of effort, but it goes beyond that) just trying to get better at a method.

Unfortunately, to be a graduate level mathematician (phD), you have to be good at both (both conscientious and creative) or *rarely* proficient at one or the other at least. Never came close to considering that track.
