Actually, I'm only fair with the skew. My best turnings are hollow forms. And yes, of course you're absolutely right: no turner even thinks about doing hollow forms until he/she is proficient at the rest of it.

As for the skew, I bought my first Sears tube style lathe years and years ago from a guy and didn't know anything. So I got a video by Richard Raffan on using a skew chisel. After watching Raffan, I thought I would try it. I bought a skew chisel (a really good one,too) and started. Well, nothing happened. The wood wouldn't cut. I called the guy who sold me the lathe and complained! He ridiculed me, saying, "Are you nuts. nobody tarts with the skew. Raffan has been doing it for ten years an you for ten minutes!" Of course he was right. I was an idiot! That guy died, sadly, so I never got the chance to apologize. By the way, the problem was that I had no idea what a sharp chisel should be!

I suppose I should have learned something about learning by now.
