So nobody says,"Not too bad for the first time!" Oh well.

I now see a difference between the piano playing technique philosophy and learning to do dovetails. When you practice the technically hard passage in a real musical piece, if you mess up there's no harm at all. For the similar issue with a wood project, if you screw it up, then you've lost the project. So I see your point: To experiment more freely it's better to have nothing at risk. So practice on a a random board.

I also do tons of watercolors, and I have a teacher (in an online class) who used to beat me up about being to rigid. It was only when I let go and stopped worrying about making a masterpiece each time that I got much better. I believe it actually has to do with the left brain?right brain thing.

As for the scribe line, I did line up the tail board with the pin board and scribe one, but it seems to have disappeared. (It's a bit more visible on the other side.)

Well today, for better or worse ( worse probably) I am going to try to mark and cut the pins in some walnut. I'll post a pic when I'm done.
