A reamer is a tool that makes a cylinder hole into a conical one. I've purchased mine for a turning saw build that haven't happened so far, yet I found other uses for it. E.g. sometimes I use round dowels as structural members. Since it's pretty much impossible to find a dowel that matches a drill bit, I like to wedge them, which also makes them look less "mechanical". A conical reamer will extend a rim with just half of a turn. A reamer can enlarge a hole in thin stock too. Obviously it's not an essential tool, but not a single trick pony either.
