In the machine shop they last a long time. Proper hardening and design, but also because they are run at low speed with lots of lubricant. I used to buy them from McMaster Carr for our machinist and he never wore one out that I can recall. They get far fewer miles on them than something like an end mill. I do kind of wonder if the cheap ones on Amazon would do ok in steel if run like a machinist would run them. Since I usually just trusted the machinist's judgement on what to buy we got everything at McMaster or MSC. I always figured it was best to keep that guy happy with good tooling, buy cheap crap that he has to fight with and you have bigger problems than the tooling budget!
