It actually dates way back. Robert Wearing's "A resourceful woodworker" features what he calls a "dovetailing vise". My copy was printed in 1991 and it's a third edition, so probably it came into existence somewhere around WWII. I haven't seen anything like that in earlier publications. Interesting that Wearing doesn't claim he has invented it.
