Re: P.S.: Furniture vs. joinery

Warren in Lancaster, PA
Furniture making was called joinery in the 17th century. The term cabinetmaker started being used occasionally in the latter part of the century, but there was no separate guild. Craftsmen who were what we would think of as cabinetmakers called themselves joiners for another hundred years or more. Some people used both terms for themselves interchangeably. Probably some shops did specialized work, some did a great variety of work.

Some have suggested that Roubo's work referred to joiners work only. However the sections on architectural, furniture, garden furniture, and carriage making all illustrate work that was beyond the capacity of those making such comments.
