When you look at the front of the chest and then look at the sides of the chest from the inside, it is obvious that the side panels are very thin. Maybe only 5/16 inches thick. The inside framing is the structure and the side boards are just glued on, and maybe nailed where they came loose.

It is obvious why the sides cracked; this is cross grain construction.
