I'm guessing the guy started with round stock and forged it into the knife you have and was careful about heat treatment schedules after forging.

It seems like it would make excellent chisels, but to do what it needs to be like your knife is something that I can't do (lots of heat and either a power hammer or an in house rolling mill to work it).

It's clear so far that the files are better than 1095, but that's having made two 1095 chisels so far (the files spark more and take a sweeter edge off of the same media).
