This is a terrifically good thread! Thanks for raising.

To my eye, the inlaid front of the slant desk benefits greatly from the knot. In fact, I think it’s a brilliant design, in part because of the knot, which looks like a deep pool of water with ripples, which in turn ties in with the running-water motif flowing laterally across the center of the top.

I get that if you like a calm zen-like grain, the whole affair is a clean miss. But for its style, it seems grand to me!
