Even tolerating some tearout, the one thing that a knot like that does is require use of a try plane for thicknessing instead of a jack plane. It adds some time.

When I get a #1 common lot vs. FAS, there's a fair amount of stuff in the lot that won't tolerate a jack plane unless the cap is set close enough to make it work at the same speed as the try plane.
