Re: Wood ideas for Monticello book presses () Tony Wilkins
I’ll look there. I’m basing my aversion to the Borg boards on spongy white pine from Home Depot — horrible stuff for the Dutch Toolchest I started to build with it (went to poplar).
The wideness of the boards needed is definitely a concern. Part of the reason I thought about using 1x12s. I’m coming to a realization that I might have to join two boards (hopefully just two). My anxiousness comes in that it will definitely be an extension of a skill to join panels that long. I’ve liked working in cherry and have not tried soft maple, as David suggests. Cost is an issue but all wood is a little pricy out here 100 miles past the last real tree.
