This is the method that laziness has brought me to. It works well. Out and back riding the bevel. I'd bet roubo was greasing the bevel. I have also mortised with a width tapered firmer. They work far more easily but leave a slightly less clean mortise. I doubt it matters as plenty of beginners will rough up the sides of a mortise and never make one that actually fails
