Given how trivial it is to make what appears to be an equivalent convex edge with a flat abrasive it is reasonable to imagine the benefits of this profile were blundered into before.

I can do a test of the theory. I have a boxed set of socket chisels from a cabinet maker in NE PA. He worked in the early part of 1900's. His son said his chisels were as he left them. I will see, without the aid of a microscope, what the tip looks like. If it looks profiled I will find someone to photograph it.
