Hi John and all,

Do you have a drill press? I wanted a slow speed for more control, so chucked a 4” wheel in a drill press rigged for 1100rpm. Worked fine.

Here’s the cheapie drill press:

I got this result on a Japanese mortising chisel—the scale is 1 gradation = 0.01” (10 thousandths):

The unicorn is a little less than 5 thousandths, gotten by presenting chisel to wheel at 10-15 degrees. That’s in the range I wanted—more angle of presentation makes shorter curl on the tip. That unicorn increased the cutting angle by 3 degrees, from 33.5 degrees to 36.5 degrees. I get the cutting angle by sliding the chisel across my bench, and finding the lowest angle where the chisel bites into the benchtop.
