Marples chisels are notoriously off...

some of them are soft, some of them are 4 decent chisels with one soft..

and rob streeper found that some of the newer chinese marples chisels are reasonably hard, but when faced with hardwood, they appear to be not-so-great metal that's just made hard.

The biggest gains with this method are made with marginal chisels. I haven't yet found a hardened chisel that won't hold up well chopping hard maple, including an older harbor freight chisel that I have that's probably similar to the golly-ghee aldi chisels that paul sellers touts. Those chisels are soft and are no match for something like an ashley iles chisel, but when both are "unicorned" suddenly, the performance gap is not very large.
