There is a persistent theory that machine work is automatically faster and more accurate than hand work. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. The owner of the shop I worked for would visibly cringe when you picked up a chisel to clean mortises :D

I've never seen the point in the drill and pare method. That is slooooow!

While a hollow chisel mortiser is faster than hand mortising, I've never found that it was worth setting up and using for just a couple of them. Up to about 6 mortises I go for the chisel as my machine has a huge bit in it by default. If it lived with a 5/16" bit installed I would use it more for the odd cabinet door and stuff that I typically now do by hand.
