..this must've been an artifact of people trying to make mortises that would have through tenons sticking through.

On small work, it has some sense of putting socks in a ball, putting them in a shoe and then trying to put the shoes and socks on that way.

(of course, i tried all of these when I was a beginner).

I can see where it would make more sense in a very large mortise as it somewhere above 1/2" , deep mortises start to become shoulder torture and in green wood, the persistent "jammed socks" in the mortise wouldn't be so hard.
