Hand Tools
David Weaver
...neener, it's offered in the sense of understanding how the advice could've been so poor for someone working from rough to finished only with hand tools. Larry's planes (or the type that he advocates) work great in any other context. The moulding planes and his and don's DVDs, as well as the floats offered are excellent. This is limited only to using bench planes for dimensioning and advising people of the shortcomings of the double iron design (which larry asserted . I just can't remember anyone else to attribute it to).
I could ask larry if he still posted, but he doesn't. I remember this so clearly because I spent money and time taking his advice on planes until it was intolerable (about 100 board feet into dimensioning).
If he stated that he does most of his work other than fitting of plane parts and shaping of handles (perhaps) by machine, it would solve the mystery. Otherwise, those of us who spent time digging in the woods looking for truffles are left guessing.
Essential human laziness will lead pretty much everyone to the same road when dimensioning, but without the dimensioning and the understanding of economy of effort, many ways work well....the context really matters.
