If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If it's too loose, try one remedy. Pick one based on your best judgment of your situation. If you go too far, it may hold just fine, but you may need to whale on it to get it loose again. All benches are different, some differences are material to this discussion, but most are not. There may have even been production process differences over the life of the tool. If so, they are not documented, and there are no serial numbers stamped into the steel. Maybe, you just need a bigger hammer. Maybe mine lets go easier because my bench top is made from Ulmus rubra.
