I forgot all about this, and I even saw his holdfasts. Much better solution (IMHO) than severe roughening of the shaft. All the old 'fast' I've seen whether at auctions or in living history sites had fairly smooth shafts. All showed wear and scratched, but not enough to look like a rat-tail file.
"Two lines" is 0.167"? Doubt I'll go that thin, but will take some meet off mine. In all likelihood it will probably be an iterative process.
