Subject:
Sycamore as a commercial species

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.
It never shows up in hardwood market reports so there is no national market for it. My limited experience with it was warpage when air drying. A local factory bought it in 6/4 lumber and turned stair balusters. There are plenty of trees available and they tend to be tall, straight and free of lower branches. I saw 6/4 boards at this factory that were more than 36" wide (took two lumber rules end to end to scale them). It could be a good timber tree, but it must have some disadvantage that limits its appeal in the commercial market.

I turned some replacement balusters for the Barter Theater (drunken actor kicked them out). I found it turned nicely. I did not finish them.....probably painted.
