..but you never know!! There are manual (non crank) concave style sharpeners now that can point the pencils more acutely at the point than they do on the barrel.

The long point sharpener that I just ordered (princely sum of about $8.50) apparently doesn't just sharpen at a narrower taper, but allows sharpening two separate angles instead of a concave curve - steeper angle on the barrel and narrower angle on the lead.

I like the boston ranger (the cranker that I have in the shop), but on cheap pencils, it can get aggressive and break the leads out. it also sharpens a nice long point - with the caveat that the pencil has to be able to tolerate the long point.
