I've been known to use a sharp chisel, bevel down.

But I also really like the Boston Champion sharpener. I've long had one that was left over from the map drafting room of my dad's closed mineral exploration biz from 1985 or so.

Great sharpeners, work with any reasonably sized pencil, always center the point, and nothing like the lousy ones you recall from school days. Also, spare parts readily available on ebay.

Now if I could just keep my wife from putting tooth dents in all the nice shop pencils as she works on a project! :D (yeah, I have a box of blackwings too... don't dare bring them out for fear they will suffer the abuse that the Ticonderogas currently bear solo)
