Abbrassives remove material by scratching it away. The finer the scratches the smoother and more reflective the surface.

Burnishing, on the other hand, doesn’t scratch or remove material, but compresses the high points of the scratches closer to the bottom of the scratches, making the resulting surface smoother and more reflective/ shinier.

I burnish small turnings with paper coffee filter paper. And if you apply enough pressure at higher speeds you can scorthch / shade the wood.
