A few notes on old terminology.

A whetstone can be coarse or fine, oil stone or water stone.

A hone slate and a whet slate are fine stones; in an 1885 dictionary a whetslate is an oil stone or novaculite, also called whetstone slate.

Hone, slate, and oil stone usually denote a fine stone.

A roofing slate can be used to sharpen, but that is not usually what is meant by "honing slate".
