I'm curious what sort of results might arise from other sharpening media?

Do you have oil stones, or waterstones on hand?

It's my 'SWAG' that tool steel formulations arose in conjunction with contemporary sharpening approaches. This is what makes Japanese blades so expensive:
waterstones are necessary for best results.
