..the other questions are easily answered, but not maybe for a group of newbies who have just set out on a method that won't work with certain irons.

I can do freehand with the cast diamond plate and the diamond hones about as fast as the cycle time with carbon steel, but I still like to use stones, so the eased temper has pretty much put me back to where I was with the finishing. The reminder about why I don't use guides was a nice refresher. It always seems like it should be as fast, but it's not. It takes too much control away from a user.

The remaining question is whether or not I will be able to work with the xhp and find the same lack of defects as carbon steel while planing. In my initial tests, I didn't see much, but the surface left by XHP is brighter by quite a bit, so it's hard to tell if tiny defects are just because the surface is too bright to hide much (this can be a problem planing with japanese planes - things that would be hidden with a stanley and a washita are glaring).
