I have had a chance to look at these reports. Kato was investigating "self sharpening" in wood cutting blades and bits. The bevel of the blade was coated with something abrasion resistant and the base metal was something that would wear. Chromium and vanadium carbide coatings were investigated. The "soft" metal wore faster than the bevel coating resulting in the persistence of a relatively sharp cutting edge with clearance. Neat SEM pictures of the progress. Interesting but of little relevance to hand planing.
