...it'd be a whole lot easier to determine what's what if all of the carbides just came in different colors.

I guess the irons would be brown looking and pretty ugly if that were the case, though.
(can't always keep the train of thought in a creative mind from being wacky and going several steps into what if scenarios that make no sense to ponder).
